The math tends to look the same: roughly two years and $2 million before the first policy is sold. In a recent webinar hosted by Nick Lampereelli with Ted Stucky of Bridge Specialty Group and Efinity's Scott Martin, the panel dug into how much of that cost comes down to one avoidable mistake, buying carrier technology you don't need. The instinct is to grab a carrier's platform and rebrand it. It looks like a shortcut, but carrier systems are built for permanence: heavy compliance, deep audit trails, years of product debt. That makes sense for the entity holding the risk. For a new MGA, it's weight that diverts the two things you have least of, capital and management attention, away from the actual business. And the actual business is distribution. An MGA sells insurance, so success comes from finding demand and making it easy for brokers to place business with you. Carriers need a system of record. An MGA needs a system of engagement, built around the broker relationship, speed to quote, and frictionless submissions. Confusing the two is how MGAs end up over-engineered and under-distributed. The real leverage sits where operations meet marketing. Automated broker onboarding can cut time from first contact to first policy by more than 40 percent, and abandoned-process campaigns re-engage brokers who stalled mid-workflow. Throughput gained without adding headcount. The panel's take on AI was refreshingly disciplined. Shaving a task from five minutes to three is a distraction for a seven-person startup. Aim AI at capturing broker attention and telling your story better, because attention and distribution are the bottleneck, not back-office speed.
